What would benefit your patients/students the most?

In regards to education, patients benefit from knowing that their school district is in contact with the treatment provider, so some level of appropriate instruction can be provided while an individual is receiving treatment. When an adolescent gets placed in the hospital, they may experience anxiety relating to “falling behind” in school. Providing a link to an adolescent’s education helps give the adolescent peace of mind, and also provides an opportunity to work on some studies, while also focusing on their treatment.

Why did you choose LearnWell?

Learnwell provides education and support to individuals while they receive treatment at the hospital. Learnwell’s team is very accessible, and is motivated to provide a link between the hospital treatment team and the individuals’ school districts.

What do you think LearnWell is exceedingly good at?

Learnwell is exceedingly good at communication and offering support to the hospital staff.

How does LearnWell compliment what you do?

Learnwell offers virtual instruction, which allows our patients to safely access education in a setting where they may also receive mental health treatment. They act as a liaison between the hospital and school districts in order to meet more individualized educational needs of our patients.

What trends are you seeing in mental health care for children & adolescents?

During the last few years, there appears to be an increase in the need for mental healthcare treatment for children and adolescents. Adolescents appear to be open to discussing mental health related issues, and often times, bravely seek out treatment relating to issues they may be experiencing, such as trauma, depression, anxiety, and thoughts of self harm.

This case study was responded to by the Chief Nursing Officer, Nurse Manager and Program Manager at the center.
